What is Venetian Plaster?

Venetian Plaster is a decorative wall & ceiling plaster that consists of natural lime and marble dust or marble chips. The plaster is applied by a trowel or spatula in multiple thin layers and then burnished to a smooth surface with the illusion of depth and texture. If left un-burnished, Venetian plaster has a matt finish that is rough and stone-like to the touch. Venetian Plaster is commonly highly polished to create a glossy marble like effect, although this is not always the case.

Another term for Venetian Plaster is Polished Plaster, most commonly used when referring to a textured finish such as the pitted effect, travertine or limestone, but can also be highly polished. All plasters can be colour washed or tinted to your desired colour and can either be left natural or sealed with a protective wax to extend the life of the plaster.

Visual effects aside, the waterproofing and antibacterial qualities have also made Venetian Plaster very desirable for luxury bathrooms and other wet areas. Not confined to interior use, it can also be used on the exterior of buildings to great effect.
